Neuropathy Prevention
Certain platinum-based chemotherapy treatments—like cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin—can sometimes cause Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) , a nerve-related side effect that makes your hands and feet extremely sensitive to heat, cold, or even light touch. We know this can be frustrating and painful.

The good news? There’s a simple, evidence-backed method called cryotherapy, ice therapy or simply, “icing,” that many patients have found helpful in reducing or even preventing this kind of neuropathy. By gently cooling the hands and feet during treatment, it can help protect the nerves from some of the harsh effects of chemo.

Many people have had great success with this approach—including our founder, Kathy, who knows firsthand the difference it has made in her life.

At Project Third Chair, we are passionate about not only educating patients on how cryotherapy can help but also providing the supplies and guidance needed to make it easy to use during treatment.
DONATE AN ICE THERAPY KIT
At Project Third Chair, we’re dedicated to supporting patients through the small comforts that can make a big difference during chemotherapy. Through Kat’s Corner, we provide both education and supplies to help patients use ice therapy—a simple method that can ease some of the painful side effects of treatment.

A gift of $175 provides a complete ice therapy kit that can bring real relief and comfort to someone in the middle of their treatment. Each kit includes 8-hour ice packs for the wrists, ankles, under the feet, and lap. To soothe oral sensitivity, it also comes with a thermal tumbler for ice chips or another frozen treat. Everything is packed in a small wheeled bag, so patients can easily bring it with them to and from the infusion center.

Imagine a patient arriving for a tough day of treatment, opening their kit, and feeling a little more in control, a little cooler, a little comforted—that’s the difference your gift can make.

By supporting this effort, you can help turn challenging days into ones that feel a bit more manageable and cared for. Click the button below to purchase one or more kits and bring this comfort to someone who needs it.
Each kit you gift is thoughtfully assembled based on research, clinical guidance, and patient experiences, to provide the most effective comfort during treatment. Inside the kit, a patient will find:
-
Two ice packs for the wrists
-
Two ice packs for the ankles
-
One larger icepack for under the feet
-
One larger ice pack for the lap
-
A tumbler for ice chips
-
Washable covers for the ice packs
-
A small wheeled case for transport to and from the infusion center.
-
Simple therapy suggestions, drawn from both evidence based research and patient testimonials, to help them get the most benefit
We’ve also learned of an alternative to using ice chips throughout the infusion. Patients can ask their doctor for a prescription for an FDA-approved device called the Chemo Mouthpiece, which can help reduce oral sensitivity during treatment.
While we don’t have personal experience with this device, we would love to hear from any patients who have tried it and are willing to share their experiences, send us an email at info@projectthirdchair.com. The video to the right is the device designer and a cancer survivor describing his experience and motivation for creating the device.
